CLSA Funding
CLSA Funding timeline
Data Collection and Biomarker inclusion
- 2021 to 2027
- Continued implementation of the approved CLSA protocol ($52M), including data collection for more than 50,000 participants for the period of 2021 to 2027. This six-year period will allow the team to collect data for the third follow-up (2021-2024) and the fourth follow-up (2024-2027).
Total amount funded by CIHR: $132,606,000
Protocol Implementation Investments:
- 2015 to 2021
- Continued implementation of the approved CLSA protocol ($52.8M), including data collection for all 50,000 participants for the period of 2015 to 2021. This six-year period will allow the team to collect data for first follow-up (2015-2018) and second follow-up (2018-2021).
- 2008-2015
- CLSA Team funded ($23.5 million) to support the Implementation Phase which includes the first wave of recruitment and baseline data collection from all 50,000 CLSA participants.
Protocol Development Investments:
- 2006-2008
- CLSA team funded ($2.1 million) to support Content Development and Validation
- 2004-2006
- Conduct of CLSA: Methodological Feasibility Studies
- Development and International Peer review of CLSA Protocol
- 2002-2004
- Development and International Peer review of CLSA Protocol Design
- CLSA Team funded ($1,744,000) to support the Methodological Feasibility Studies
- 2001-2002
- CIHR Institute of Aging issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) entitled: Protocol Design for the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging. The RFP was based on a CLSA Design Workshop held that same month in Aylmer, Quebec.
- Launch and International Peer review of Request for Proposals, entitled: Protocol Design for the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging.
- Meritorious CLSA team, headed by 3 principal investigators (Dr. Parminder Raina, McMaster University; Dr. Christina Wolfson, McGill University; and Dr. Susan Kirkland, Dalhousie University) funded ($462,000) to develop CLSA Protocol Design.
CLSA Catalyst Grants: Analysis of CLSA Data
To raise awareness around the availability of CLSA data as new data releases are completed, as well as to catalyze and support the research of Canadian researchers using available CLSA data across all four health research themes, the CIHR Institutes of Aging (IA) and Population and Public Health (IPPH) have launched the recurring funding opportunity: Analysis of CLSA Data Catalyst Grants.
Since 2016 and over five launches, a total of 126 applications were funded through internal partnerships with eight CIHR Institutes, in addition to external partnerships with the Réseau québécois de recherche sur le vieillissement (RQRV) and the Canadian Space Agency (CSA). To date, the total contribution from CIHR and partners is more than $ 8.9 millions.
These grants have been successful in supporting research in a broad range of areas including but not limited to diet, cognitive function, patterns of alcohol consumption, lung function and sedentary behavior, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, health inequalities among under-studied populations, and other topics related to the CIHR mandate.
For information about any active and/or past “Analysis of CLSA Data Catalyst Grants” launches, refer to the table below. To learn more about the groundbreaking research that use the CLSA data platform, refer to the funding decisions column.
